St. John's welcomes all children, ages 2-18,to meet every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.  A lectionary-based curriculum is used and

taught by members of the church.  

St. John's offers adult education opportunities

at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

Sunday school activities this semester will include learning the

Good Samaritan Rap, and contemporary songs such as You
are Holy, Shine Jesus Shine, and Every Move I Make.

 

One of the special Life Long Learning events this year was a

Family Advent Retreat

held at Lutheran Camp Chrysalis

on the weekend of December 7 - 9, 2007.

Wednesday evening is "the evening" at St. John's.

A list of the evening's activities are listed below :

 

5:30 p.m. - Vespers (Prayers) - Wolff Chapel

5:30-6:45 p.m. - Dinner in Memorial Hall (cafeteria style--$5.00 adults, $3.00 children)

6:15 p.m. - Bell Choir rehearsal in 3rd floor choir room

6:30 p.m.  -  8:00 p.m. Youth group

7:00 pm   -  8:00 pm  -  Catechetical classes (age 13 - 15) in 3rd floor conference room

7:00 p.m. - Adult Choir rehearsal in 2nd floor choir room

 

6:00 p.m. - St. John’s Book Group
The St. John’s Book Group invites all readers to join its sessions.  Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 6:00 in the Pioneer Room.  There are also plans for monthly or quarterly meetings, in the homes of group members, for open discussion and prayer support.  The first text chosen by the group is Jesus, the latest book by Marcus Borg, published in 2006.  Over the past few years, the book discussion group has read and discussed about a dozen books, ranging from historical texts and inspirational works to studies on Biblical and other religious topics.  Our usual pace is a chapter per session.  Discussion is lively and thought-provoking.  All are welcome.

ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES

Series 3: Jan. 6-Mar. 23 (12 weeks)


The History of the Bible: The Making of the New Testament Canon
This course will explore the New Testament, the most important collection of books in the history of Western Civilization. Designed to answer the basic questions, the course will discuss basic facts as what books it contains, when they were written, by whom, when, and for what purpose; how the books were copied and transmitted down through the ages; and when and why they came to be collected together into a canon of Scripture.

The course curriculum includes a set of 20-minute video lectures by Dr. Bart D. Erhman, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  After the video presentation, the participants will break up into small groups to discuss two to three probing questions.

2) Paul – Our Earliest Christian Author
3) The Pauline Epistles
4) The Problem of Pseudonymity
5) The Beginnings of the Gospel Traditions
6) The Earliest Gospels
7) The Other Gospels
8) Apocalypticism and the Apocalypse of John
9) The Copyists Who Gave us Scripture
10) Authority in the Early Church
11) The Importance of Interpretation
12) When Did the Canon Get Finalized?

Series 4: Mar. 30 – May 11 (7 weeks)
The Lutheran Course


The Lutheran Course takes you through the fundamentals of Lutheranism in 7 sessions. Each session features a large-group DVD presentation with top-notch theologians, followed by a small-group time that works through the ideas with depth and humor.  Great for new Lutherans, old Lutherans, and anyone in between.

55+ ORGANIZATION

St. John's is blessed with many senior members  who belong to an organization called 55+.  The group meets once a month usually in the Pioneer Room for lunch and a program on a variety of subjects including health, home care, etc.  Each member over 55 years of age is invited to participate in this day of fellowship and learning.
